Predicted global distribution of Burkholderia pseudomallei and burden of melioidosis
Nature Biology, 2016

It is estimated about 165,000 cases of melioidosis per year, among which there are 89,000 deaths. Following the estimate, it is understood that the disease is extremely unreported in the 45 countries already considered endemic, and even that the disease may be endemic in another 34 countries that have never even reported the disease.

In view of this panorama, added to the number of suspected cases and fatalities, it is emphasized that the disease requires more attention from public health and health policies.
